Calli Girl | Arizona Photo Shoot | Salem, Oregon Children’s Photographer

It has been almost a year since my husband, Benjamin, and I got to visit our Aunt, Uncle and Cousins (Jeff’s side but I still totally claim them) in Arizona. One of the things that I loved about Arizona was that it is SO different than Oregon. Palm trees, dust, 70 degree weather in February. It really is a beautiful place and I was itching to get little miss Calli in front of my camera! So, my Aunt Nikki (I told you I claim them) took us to this amazing farm with lemon orchards, peacocks, chickens and desert farm houses. It was really a photographers dream location. Callie was so sweet and worked it for the camera. I hope to visit this amazing desert dreamland again and get even more photos little miss thang, Callie.

Here are some of the photos from Callie’s Arizona-desert-palm-farmhouse-photo shoot!

Bryan & Jessie Tie the Knot | Salem, Oregon Wedding Photographer | Yellow Arrow Photography

I have known Jessie for about 25 years. We grew up going to the same charming elementary school where we hung out on the play ground wearing our older brother’s No Fear t-shirts and Quicksilver sweatshirts that were waaaay to big for us. Jessie is one of the very few people that I have known in my life where I’ve always been able to be my 100% nerd self and feel confident at the same time. We moved on to middle school and experienced the awkward years of puberty, boys, make up, wearing those awful shorts for volleyball, and mimicking the Spartans from SNL. We thought quoting lines from Wyane’s World was cool and didn’t understand that the song “Crash” by Dave Matthew’s Band was super inappropriate for us to sing at lunch. High school came along and Jessie was just as sweet. As we grew up, life happened…meaning time passed quickly and we didn’t see each other as much. But, I find that she is one of those people that you can come back together with and still feel like you did when you were 7 years old, 12 years old, or 18 years old. She is a gem. One of a kind.

So, when she asked me to photograph her wedding, I was seriously honored. Spending time with Jessie again has really been awesome! And honestly, she hasn’t changed. She is still goofy, beautiful, kind, and whitty. I don’t know Bryan very well but I know that if Jessie picked him for the rest of her life, he must be pretty awesome.

I really wish both Bryan and Jessie the best and I pray that you experience more love and friendship than you ever thought was possible as you grow together in your marriage. Thank you so much for asking me to capture your special day. Hope you guys enjoy this sneak peak!

The Yellow Arrow Story

This Christmas I wanted to do something for the many people that have supported Yellow Arrow and help get it off the ground, so my good friend Katie Plumb helped me make cookie boxes for the people that have been there since the beginning (if you want the recipe, just ask). It’s easy for me to get overwhelmed when I think about all the wonderful people I have met over the past year. Many of you have asked how I came up with the name “Yellow Arrow Photography” and my explanation might have been pretty short and sweet. Well, here’s the longer version.

The truth is, a year ago Yellow Arrow Photography wasn’t even on my mind. After the death of my 16 year old sister in law I didn’t know where I would go with photography…or even if I would continue to push my business, Jessica Dawn Photo. It wasn’t until the Spring of 2013 that the vision became clear to me and after consulting with a few people, Yellow Arrow Photography was created.

I worked with a good friend to create the logo. Megan Ward with Red Pearl Designs couldn’t have done a better job with bringing what I had in my head, to life. An arrow with lovebirds above it. When I saw the graphic I was so excited and knew this was completely right. She nailed it!

So, why Yellow? And an arrow? Here is the explanation of the symbols…

The color yellow represents a yellow dress that Mckenzie (my sister-in-law) wore in one of our last photoshoots together.

The arrow represents forward movement and how I will continue to move forward with my photography. No longer will I hold myself back due to self-doubt.

The love birds are in memory of Mckenzie and the sweet relationship I shared with her while she was still here.

So, in a nutshell Yellow Arrow Photography is 100% in honor of my sister in law. Everything about it is for her, and I couldn’t feel more blessed because of the paths I’ve crossed with people I never knew I would meet or touch because of this love I have for taking photographs. Thank you again to all of you that have supported, partnered and encouraged me since I started this journey. I will remember each of you as I continue to blaze forward.
